MGE Special Issue

Microbiology Australia: Call for Submissions

A special issue focused on Mobile Genetic Elements

We are excited to announce that the MGE SIG will be guest editing a special issue of Microbiology Australia, the journal of the Australian Society for Microbiology, scheduled for publication likely in September 2026. The issue will be guest edited by Josh Ramsay, Leah Roberts, and Galain Williams.

This special issue will be focused on Mobile Genetic Elements, and is therefore a fantastic opportunity to showcase the breadth and impact of MGE research across Australia. We invite you to contribute and highlight the MGE work happening in your lab.

These issues generally feature short “In focus” articles of approximately 1,500-2,000 words with 2-3 figures. These can be mini-reviews, commentaries, or short reports of primary research. The articles are free to publish, open access, are peer-reviewed, and can be added to your CVs. They are also listed in Thomson Reuter’s EmergingScience Citation Index (ESCI).

Call for Contributions: We would very much welcome any members of the MGE SIG to put yourself forward to contribute an article. This is a perfect opportunity for postdocs or PhD students (with their supervisor's support) to lead a publication, and can help to satisfy publication requirements for PhD milestones. We also welcome suggestions for cover images, which if selected, represents a fantastic opportunity for your CV!

Submission Timeline:

  • Contributions Due: April/May 2026

  • Peer-Review Due: June/July 2026

  • Final Versions to Editor: July/August 2026

  • Publication: September 2026

We look forward to hearing from you and to creating an issue that truly highlights the fantastic MGE research in our community. Please note that we will also be reaching out to members to peer review these articles.
